At approximately 4am, I awoke in my bed to a scary amount of fluid. I call the OB and am directed to the hospital... redirected to Duke versus Durham Regional. We make it to the hospital before 5am, thanks to Ronda coming to watch Stella B.
I meet the Triage Labor & Delivery doctors and they verify that my water did, in fact, break and that I am 4cm dilated. At 25 weeks, this is not an ideal situation for baby "Skipper." I am prepped for C-Section, in the event that contractions began, since the baby is breech. I am not allowed any fluids or food for 24 hours, but that doesn't matter because all that matters is that I do not go into active labor. I'm given steroid shot immediately for support of baby's lungs once she is born. I have an IV started for antibiotics to help prevent infection and to minimize risk of contractions. I have monitors set-up immediately for baby's heart rate, my heart rate and for contractions.
A long night of constant monitoring and worrying, NICU consult and discussions of scary possibilities has yielded the best possible results for that first 24 hour milestone... no contractions and baby Skipper is showing signs of a very healthy 25 week old! Plus, I received another steroid shot, which is so beneficial to Skipper's lungs!
I am getting settled into my new routine here at "Chateau Duke."
