Through my NICU experience, so far, I've taken away 2 different Schools of Thought, when it comes to Neonatal Medicine. The first is probably how we've made so many medical advances and saved so many tiny babies' lives, with medicine and medical equipment. The second is a bit more "holistic," that encourages a longer-term, more natural progression of supporting baby's weight gain, which eventually will eliminate other medical health issues.
I've definitely gained a reputation as a "crunchy granola." I certainly advocate for as many things natural as I can and try to incorporate that into my life. But, I cannot ignore the extremely unnatural way that Cora was delivered and the medical support that has kept her alive and healthy. I have come to appreciate medicine in a whole new way, even though it is sometimes frustrating.
This video is extremely emotional for me, but as hard as it is to watch, because of those joyous yet sad/scary memories it invokes - the homecoming is all worth it. The dad who created this video dedicates it to the NICU staff and I would like to do the same, here. What you do every day is nothing short of miraculous:
Leigh I saw this posted on FB a few days after Cora was born. I thought that it was sign that all would be fine. It was very touching and frightening to see what was in store for you and Matt. I can only thank God that all id going so well and yes it is miraculous and medical advances have made the impossible possible. God Bless!
ReplyDeleteSuch a touching video... definitely got me thinking about you and all your drives into Durham on your way to/from Duke. You are such a strong, amazing person and I'm lucky to call you my friend. Much love to you all and thrilled to continue to hear great progress from Cora on her journey to come home!! I can't believe tomorrow will be nine weeks. I remember sitting with you at Duke that week and talking about you hoping to be there for another 9 weeks...so glad she's the perfect preemie!!!
