Hopefully, I'm not jinxing the situation, but Cora has been like a different baby this week! She is more alert and happy, in general. I don't have to gingerly touch her for fear of emesis and I think our extra time together (since I'm not working) is helping us bond. Clearly the Prilosec has kicked-in and made a big difference. She is not vomiting so much and she is definitely not so uncomfortable, after being treated for the reflux and thrush. Additionally, as we discussed in our family meeting, I think it's made a difference that there are less interruptions on our time together. Rather than having Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Lactation, and nursing staff there for each feeding, we have removed all the pressure to allow Cora and I to work together in peace. She's doing great.
I'm relieved to report that the Eye Exam revealed that her ROP has not progressed. The eye doctor said that it appears that ROP is correcting itself. He will re-examine her on Tuesday next week, because ROP can still quickly onset, but it is definitely a good sign that she avoided laser surgery this week.
To all the moms out there, who have tried to breast-feed a newborn, this is the experience that I had today... she's acting like a full-term newborn who doesn't know how to latch. She's gained her strength and I feel like I need 10 hands to properly position her and myself to get the right latch. As frustrating as it is in the moment - I'm grateful that this is now our issue. She's also taking more and more from the bottle when the nurses "PO feed" her. All of this points to going home soon! Some of her fans have stopped by to tell me how great they hear she is doing - word travels quickly.
