Today's the Day...

Cora is currently receiving 8cc of packed red blood cells. The decision was based solely on her low hematocrit count (24 and it should be more like 29-35). She continues to do well, so this transfusion should stave off anything that may impact the significant progress that she's made the last couple weeks. I know this is a positive thing for Cora in the long run, especially since it is so commonplace, but today's visit was pretty difficult.

We arrived right as they were putting in her IV. This didn't go as planned, so it took a little time and then ended up with the IV placed in her head. I knew this was a possibility, but it's different to see it there. It does not hurt her and it is good for her practitioners because they can easily see it, at least with the nasal cannula instead of CPAP with hat. However, Cora is just not ready for nasal cannula and she had a few Bradys and Desats while I was Kangarooing her. So, our visit ended with me putting her back in her isolette while they cut a hole in her new CPAP hat for her IV. This is not the Christmas Eve visit I wanted, but I am expecting our Christmas Day visit to go just great, since she will feel so much better after getting this tiny amount of blood infused.

Mommy needs a Christmas valium, but I am comforted by all the wonderful, smart and loving people taking care of her and who have just been wonderful to help me through this too.

  1. She continues to be a beautiful miracle. Hang in there Leigh, I hope you were able to enjoy your Christmas and Stella had a nice visit from Santa.
